Overview
A management consulting firm was delivering Power BI reports to 15 enterprise clients — each with their own brand guidelines, logo placement, colour palette, and typography requirements. Their analysts were spending 2–3 days per engagement just setting up the visual framework before any actual analysis work could begin. Reports were inconsistent across clients and even across projects for the same client, creating a poor impression at a premium price point.
The engagement designed and built a template system: a master .pbit file with a parameterised JSON theme engine, a reusable component library of pre-built visuals and layout blocks, a bookmark-based navigation system, and a deployment guide that reduced new report setup from 2–3 days to under 2 hours.

Challenges & Solutions
Power BI's JSON theme engine is powerful but poorly documented, and many properties behave differently depending on visual type. I systematically tested every visual type against the theme file and documented the overrides required for each — producing a reference sheet the firm's analysts could use when the default theme behaviour was unexpected.
The bookmark navigation system needed to work reliably across desktop, web browser, and the Power BI mobile app. Testing revealed that certain bookmark interactions behaved differently in the mobile layout. The solution was a dedicated mobile layout with simplified navigation that still used the same bookmarks, ensuring a consistent experience regardless of how the client viewed the report.
